RRR Crosses 100 Crores Gross At The International Box Office

Mumbai, March 27 - SS Rajamouli's period action drama film, "RRR" has had an excellent debut at the international box office, breaching the 100 crores mark in the first 3-days. It has become the first Indian movie since Aamir Khan-fronted "Thugs Of Hindostan" (2018) to reach the box office milestone. ## At the USA box office, "RRR" had the second biggest launch ever after "Baahuabli 2" ($10.4M) for an Indian movie, grossing $9.7 million (74 cr.) in the first 3 days. The film landed at number three this weekend in the USA, after "The Lost City" ($31M), and "The Batman" ($20.5M). ## Apart from the USA, the Jr. NTR/Ram Charan-fronted movie has done approx. $1.10 million (8.39 cr.) at the Australia and New Zealand box office, followed by the United Kingdom ($875K or 6.68 cr.), and approx. $2 million (15.25 cr.) in the rest of the world. Overall, "RRR" has scored $13.67 million (104 cr.) overseas in the first 3 days. ## Rajamouli's last film "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" had scored 381 crores at the international box office. How close "RRR" could reach the BB2 mark is remains to see but it is unlikely to cross Prabhas-starrer lifetime overseas biz. ## "RRR" is a fictional story about two Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Jr. NTR), who fought against the British Raj and Nizam of Hyderabad respectively. Hyderabad, March 26 - SS Rajamouli-directed "RRR" had a huge task in hand to perform on an opening day and it has not only performed successfully but also broked almost all the existing box office records for an Indian movie. The latest period action drama film got massively benefitted from the Telugu states governments' ticketing policy though. ## The movie was hugely hyped before the release and it justified the hype by proving to be a cinematic masterpiece. It has a direct competition with "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" (2017), which was also directed by SS Rajamouli. The historical action drama film had held the record of the biggest opening ever for an Indian movie at the worldwide box office, which has now been breached by "RRR" almost 5 years later. ## Comparing opening day biz of "RRR" and "Baahubali 2" - the latest movie has grossed 223 crores (new record) while BB2 minted 217 crores worldwide on the opening day. Domestically, "RRR" has scored 156 crores gross as compared to 153 crores of BB2 while overseas, the former has scored 67 crores against 65 crores of Prabhas-starrer. ## Thanks to the new policies, "RRR" also has an upper hand over "Baahubali 2" in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where Jr. NTR/Ram Charan film minted 102.50 crores while "Baahubali 2" had made way below but still good, 57 crores on the first day. However, in the Karnataka state, ATBB BB2 maintained its record of 19.50 crores against 14.50 crores of "RRR". In Tamil Nadu, "RRR" won the battle with a slight margin as it generated 10 crores against 9.25 crores of BB2.## "Baahubali 2" had grossed 1788 crores worldwide, in which, the Hindi collection was the biggest contributor with approx. 650 crores gross (India). This record is expected to remain unbeatable in the near future. "RRR" is unlikely to reach BB2's Hindi figure. In Hindi, BB2 had scored 52 crores gross on the first day while "RRR" could manage only 23.68 crores. Even in the Hindi belt, "RRR" is way behind BB2 on the first day as it scored only 25 crores as compared to 60.80 crores of BB2. ## Despite the advantage of higher ticket prices, one must admit that the "RRR" release has brought the Indian film industry to its strong feet. It had the biggest hurdle in the form of the covid-19 pandemic which was not the case with "Baahubali 2". Hyderabad, March 26 - When Prabhas-fronted "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" was released in 2017, it became the first Indian movie to score over 100 crores gross for all languages. 2 years later, another Prabhas movie in the form of "Saaho" did the same but couldn't break "Baahubali 2" record.## And now, after almost 5 years, director SS Rajamouli's "RRR" has breached the fortress of his own directorial "Baahubali 2", and become the highest-grossing Indian movie of all time at the domestic as well overseas box office on the first day. ## The period action drama film netted 130 crores* in India on Friday, breaking "Baahubali 2's" record of 121 crores. In Telugu, the film earned 101.2 crores net, again becoming the biggest movie in the languages on its opening day. Baahubali 2 had generated 58 crores in Telugu on day 1 while "Saaho" made 60.40 crores. ## In Hindi, "RRR" had a very good opening day, scoring approx. 19 crores net. It took a decent start in the morning shows but picked up towards the evening and night shows after highly positive word of mouth. The film was solid in tier 2 & 3 cities where is recorded houseful shows. ## State-wise, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were the top contributors with 102.5 crores gross, followed by Karnataka with 14.50 crores, Tamil Nadu with 10 crores, and Kerala with 4 crores. The rest of India including the Hindi belt generated 25 crores. ## Overseas, the film has had a record-breaking debut, grossing 67 crores. In the USA, "RRR" has taken the biggest opening for an Indian movie ever with $5.5 million (41.95 Cr.) on Friday, including Thursday previews of $3.3 million. The movie was strong in Australia as well and made $702K (4 Cr.) on the first day. Hyderabad, March 23 - The box office in India has started picking the pace and is expected to on its peak with the release of "RRR" from this Friday. The SS Rajamouli-directed has always been seen as a potential box office monster and even though it has been delayed multiple times, the talks around it never stopped making noise. ## Director Rajamouli has proved his box office prowess when "Baahubali" films were released in 2015 and 2017. Both "Baahubali" movies had combined grossed Rs. 2,438 crores worldwide, and went on to become the highest-grossing Indian film series worldwide. Though "RRR" is a one-part release, the expectation will be the same from this film. ## As things stand at present, "RRR" is poised to take the biggest opening in the original Telugu version. The biz in Telugu has received a major boost thanks to the hikes in ticket prices by Telugu state governments. Despite the high ticket prices, which are up to Rs. 5K for some of the benefit shows, the Telugu audiences have reacted positively and almost all the shows are booked in the biggest Telugu city, Hyderabad. ## As per the local Telugu trade portals and experts, "RRR" is expected to take the opening of Rs. 100 crores or more gross in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states alone. While the opening day figure in the said states seems too high, it can not be ruled out considering the involvement of star power in the film that is being led by two of the biggest Telugu superstars Jr. NTR and Ram Charan, apart from director Rajamouli.## Unlike Telugu, the Hindi biz, which is the second biggest market for the film, will solely depend on WOM and spot booking. The advance booking for the same is still slow. However, the trade is banking big in Hindi and are expecting the film to open between Rs. 15-20 crores. The face value of Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt, who play extended cameos in the film, might help Hindi biz to get the momentum going in addition to the popularity of Rajamouli among the Hindi audiences. In Hindi, "RRR" is expected to release on 3400 screens which are enough for the film to take the big opening.## Apart from Telugu and Hindi, the Tamil version followed by Malayalam and Kannada may contribute 8-12 crores in the overall day 1 collection of the film. At the time of "Baahubali 2", Tamil was the 3rd biggest market for the film with an opening day collection of Rs. 17 crores net. ## Overall, "RRR" is anticipated to challenge the opening day figure of "Baahubali 2", which scored Rs. 121 crores net. The movie, however, has a tough task to perform as there is no guarantee of it to open as big as "Baahubali 2" in other languages apart from Telugu. Rajamouli has had great success in Hindi with "Baahubali" films and his "RRR" is also expected to do very well outside the Telugu version. ## Mahesh Babu, meanwhile, will next be seen in Telugu actioner "Sarkaru Vaari Paata", which will be released on May 12 this year. He will also be reuniting with director Trivikram Srinivas for "SSMB28", which will go on floors soon. After Trivikram's film, SSMB will move its focus to Rajamouli's film. ## Stay tuned...
