Malaysia Government Commits To Banning More LGBT Films After Banning 'Thor' and 'Lightyear'

Kuala Lumpur, August 12 - The government of Malaysia is in no mood to spare any film that promotes LGBT elements. Marvel Studios' recent blockbuster, Thor: Love and Thunder, was stopped from releasing in the country, and the government has now confirmed that it was prevented from releasing in local theaters due to its LGBT. ## Thor 4 is one of the many Hollywood films that have been stopped from hitting theaters in Malaysia, and this also includes Pixar's recently released, Lightyear. As per Variety, both "Thor 4" and "Lightyear" were submitted by distributor Disney for classification and censorship by the country's Film Censorship Board (LPF). ## While the censor board of Malaysia at first was ready to allow the film in theaters, however, upon the condition of cutting some of the LGBT scenes but Disney chose not to surrender. "Lightyear" was banned in 16 or more Muslim-majority countries.## "Recently there was a film that did not pass censorship, that is the new 'Thor' film", said Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Zahidi Zainul Abidin. "[The movie] touched on LGBT but we see right now there are many films with LGBT elements that slip past the censorship".## Zahidi blamed foreign elements for the problem, claimed that LGBT films were becoming more subtle in their methods, and asked for public vigilance. "I am frustrated because the outside world was the one promoting LGBT,” he said responding to a question in Parliament.## While the minister said that his government is committed to banning films showing LGBT in theaters, he also revealed that beyond movie theaters and broadcast TV, his powers are limited and do not cover streaming services that are based outside the country. It has been said that "Lightyear" is already on Disney+Hotstar with an 18+ recommendation in the country. ## Zahidi advised Malaysians to exercise self-restraint and for parents to use the age-control systems contained within streaming platforms to restrict access to LGBT content.## Stay tuned...

Mumbai, August 12 - The much-awaited Bollywood biggies, Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar-fronted Raksha Bandhan performed underwhelmingly at the box office on an opening day. Being a holiday release, the industry was expecting both films to do well which didn't happen. ## Laal Singh Chaddha, which is the official remake of the classic Hollywood blockbuster Forrest Gump, was a bigger film than Raksha Bandhan. However, the opening day collection of 12 crores net of the film is too low by the standard Aamir has set over the years.## It was almost impossible to match the pre-covid level box office performance for Laal Singh Chaddha, but the movie still needed to perform much better than it actually earned, considering the big budget and scale of the film. A negative campaign was also run against the movie and that might have done damage to the movie. The word of mouth, however, is mixed. ## On the other hand, the Akshay Kumar-starrer family comedy-drama film, Raksha Bandhan collected 8.20 crores net on Thursday. Though the movie was predicted to earn around in the same range, a 10 crores start would have been nice, but unfortunately, the movie legged behind LSC in mutliplexes. The word of mouth and reivews are largly positive and this should help the movie to grow over the weekend, especially from Saturday. ## Overall, both Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan combined scored 20.20 crores net collection on the first day, which is lower than the opening of Akshay Kumar's Sooryavanshi. Los Angeles, August 12 - Warner Bros. is believed to be in the confusion regarding its future timeline under the new leadership of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. The studio under Zaslav has spoken about building a 10-year plan for DC films, that would be similar to the structure that Alan Horn and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Marvel boss Kevin Feige at Disney. ## Warner Bros., however, despite announcing its plans to expand DC Universe, has greenlit only Joker: Folie à Deux as a new film. The follow-up to the wildly successful 2019 "Joker", which grossed $1.07 billion globally, also has been set for October 4, 2024, release. ## The sequel of "Joker", meanwhile, will cost much bigger than the original film which was made in approx. $55M-$70M budget. According to Variety, both Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips will be paid a massive $20 million each to return to star and direct the movie. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga has been roped to play the iconic Harley Quinn in "Joker 2", and she will be getting $10 million for the same. ## The final cost of making the movie is expected to reach $150 million, including salaries, combined with the cost of producing complicated musical sequences. It is going to be one of the costliest DC films, however, it is still cheaper than most superhero movies. ## While only "Joker 2" has been greenlit yet, several other DC properties have been in development as feature films, some for years — "Wonder Woman 3", "Superman", "Zatanna", and "Static Shock". Hyderabad, August 11 - Telugu heartthrob Vijay Deverakonda's maiden Pan India film, Liger, is nearly two weeks away from its worldwide theatrical release. The sports action drama film is one of the most-anticipated films and the makers are leaving no stone unturned to keep the buzz high with non-stop promotion across the country. ## Directed by maverick Puri Jagannadh, Liger makers are looking super confident about the outcome of the film. The makers have already been able to fetch a handsome price for the film's worldwide theatrical rights. The overseas theatrical rights of Liger have been bought by Sarigama cinemas for 8 crores, as per reports. This is the highest ever for both Deverakonda and Jagannadh's careers. ## The domestic business of this mass entertainer has been valued at approx. 81 crores, including approx. 10 crores in Hindi version. The makers are giving heavy attention to the Hindi promotion and there is already a good buzz has been created among the Hindi audiences. Mumbai, August 10 - There is a lot depending on the upcoming two Bollywood biggies - Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan, as far as the box office is concerned. It would have been nice if they have got a solo release, but that is not happening as both the movies are releasing on August 11. ## Laal Singh Chaddha, which stars superstar Aamir Khan in the title role, is the biggest movie this month and the industry is expecting it to perform according to the reputation it is carrying. However, the advance booking trend is saying something else which might have forced the industry to lower their expectations, at least for the opening day. ## It would have been a huge surprise to see an Aamir Khan's film not able to pick in advance sales. However, things have changed post-pandemic as the trend of box office openings post-pandemic has largely been on the lower side. Irrespective of the star power, Bollywood films haven't been able to take the big opening except for Akshay Kumar's, Sooryavanshi, which opened to over 26 crores on Diwali 2021. ## Laal Singh Chaddha, which has so far grossed approx. 3.50 crores in advance sales, is looking to open around 12-13 crores. The movie will depend on word of mouth, and we are expecting it to be positive which might push the film to around 15 crores net start. The 15 crores opening is not at all good by the standard Aamir has set, but the industry should take it in a positive way as it is having a clash with another big film, that too under current circumstances. ## On the other hand, Akshay Kumar-fronted, Raksha Bandhan is not really dependent upon the advance booking trend and will largely rely on spot bookings. Going by the advance booking, the 8-9 crores opening is a sure shot, but we are expecting it to have a better spot booking, which, hopefully, will help the film to open around 10-11 crores net. ## The best thing for both the movies is that they have a long holiday weekend ahead. So, if the critics' reviews and word of mouth is positive, both LSC and RB have all the potential to grow over the weekend, which is likely to happen. New Predator Film 'Prey' Sets All-Time Record Viewership On Hulu

Los Angeles, August 10 - 20th Century Studios' new film in the Predator franchise, Prey debuted directly on Disney's Hulu platform in the United States on August 5. Being a film of the blockbuster franchise, many wondered why 20th Century and Disney didn't open the movie in cinemas exclusively. ## While there is no reason given by the studio, the movie has taken the streaming platform, Hulu by storm. On Tuesday, Disney revealed (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the film scored the No. 1 premiere on Hulu to date, including all film and TV series debuts. ## Additionally, the pic was the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star banner in all other territories, based on hours watched in the first three days of its release, however, Disney did not reveal the viewing hours. ## The development of the film, Prey, began during the production of The Predator (2018), when producer John Davis was approached by Trachtenberg and Aison, with a concept that they had been developing since 2016. The movie was always in production for direct streaming release. ## THR report says that Disney believes that sending the movie straight to Hulu — which, like other streamers, is competing to become a destination for original content — was a smart decision, and it's impossible to say whether Prey would have benefited from a theatrical release.
