'There Is a Possibility of Going Below The Set Level', Nawazuddin Siddiqui on The Future of OTTs in India

Amid the growing effects of the digital platforms, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui isn't hopeful about the future of OTTs in India. The actor feels OTT platforms in India are getting cramped and herd mentality is seeping in. He says OTT used to be a platform for unique content but not now, it is turning into a business. ## "Frankly speaking, OTT used to be a platform for content that was different from the typical Bollywood form and had a distinctive character. I am not talking about social content, but content for the audience who want something apart from the regular Bollywood", Nawazuddin told IANS.## "At the moment, there is an overload. We have a tendency of herd mentality. With that, there will be a decline and there is no doubt about it. There is a possibility of going below the set level", he added. ## "We turn art into the trade. Initially, it is an art and then eventually turns into a business. I fear the trend of showing anything and everything in the name of a business will seep OTTs. It will happen, in fact, it has already begun", shared the actor.## "For example, I didn't expect that these types of films will be released on Netflix, which I won't be able to watch. But they are being released on Netflix, especially in India. Netflix and other OTT services have a very different set of the audience", he added, without naming the films.## There was a time when the Sacred Games star, whose Serious Men, Raat Akeli Hai, and Ghoomketu released on streaming platforms this year, was hopeful about the OTT wave in India, but not anymore.## "I thought there would be a change for the better. I thought that it would go a step ahead from the bar which we had set on OTT. Now, I don't think so. I am not hopeful. That is just declining", added Siddiqui. ## Explaining his point, he said, "Because that is what happens when people come from all directions and do business in the name of creativity. Woh decrease hi hoga (it is bound to decrease)".## "I feel everyone wants to do something or the other on OTT at the moment. This is because of business. Filmmaker Abhishek Sharma, whose directorial, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari debuted in theaters on Diwali and became the first new movie release post the reopening of cinemas, has urged his fellow colleagues in the industry to release their movies in theaters to boost up the business of the exhibition industry. ## Abhishek Sharma, on taking the first move to release his film, said, "I am a very small artiste. I don't consider myself a flagbearer, but then there is a saying that who will bell the cat", stating that it's not like a pre-covid era where movies used to recover its budget within a week. Now, things have changed as might take a longer time to make a profit. ## "We are monitoring our revenues week by week, but the good thing is that people are coming to theatres to watch the film. People are coming to theatres because they have realized that things are getting normal and theatre administration are taking safety precautions while screening the film", he claimed.## Recently, Aamir Khan thronged to cinemas to watch Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari. He really liked the movie and urged people to watch it. Streaming giant Netflix on Friday announced that the platform will be available free for everyone on December 5 and 6 in India. Anyone in India can watch all the content available on the OTT platform for two days starting from 12 midnight on December 5.## "We think that giving away everyone in a country access to Netflix for free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have, the service and how it works", Greg Peters, COO and Chief Product Officer at Netflix, said during the company's earnings call.## "At Netflix, we want to bring the most amazing stories from across the world to all fans of entertainment in India. It's why we're hosting StreamFest: an entire weekend of free Netflix", the company said in a statement.## Last month, Netflix announced its plans to give users in India access to free streaming for a weekend. The YouTuber also said that the actor was unhappy with Sushant bagging MS Dhoni: The Untold Story. ## It has been reported that from the last few months, Siddiqui's YouTube channel grew immensely from 1 lakh to over 3.70 lakh subscribers and he had earned over Rs 15 lakh in four months for his content in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The 25-year-old is a civil engineer and owns a YouTube channel titled FF News. ## Recently, Shiv Sena's legal cell advocate Dharmendra Mishra filed a case against the Siddiqui too, after which the police came into action and found out that he allegedly using the SSR death case to increase his followers and earn more money.## Siddiqui's earnings were hardly around Rs 300 in the month of May and in September, he earned a massive approx. The movie isn't skipping the theatrical option but is altering course. ## The Patty Jenkins directorial will be opening in the United States theatres on Christmas Day (December 25) but will also be made available to HBO Max subscribers free of charge for its first month, Warner Bros. said Thursday. The movie will also debut in international theatres on December 16 where HBO Max isn't available. ## Sharing the news with fans, lead star Gal Gadot took to Twitter and wrote, "IT'S TIME. "A little over four million fans in the U.S. enjoyed the first Wonder Woman movie on its opening day in 2017. Is it possible for that to happen again this Christmas with Wonder Woman 1984 between theatres and HBO Max?" Killar wrote Wednesday. "We are so excited to find out, doing everything in our power to provide the power of choice to fans".## Fans aren't too pleased with Warner Bros' strategy and have been protesting on social media against the film's release on HBO Max. Some are even miffed that countries without HBO Max are not taken into consideration.
