When Roman Reigns contracted COVID-19 in January 2022, just before Day 1, a groundbreaking idea emerged in the WWE to merge the WWE Championship and Universal Title. This ambitious plan involved Reigns defeating Brock Lesnar for the WWE Title at WrestleMania 38. Initially, there were considerations to split the titles by WrestleMania 39, but those plans were ultimately discarded. Nevertheless, WWE devised a strategy to divide the titles following WrestleMania, granting Raw its own distinguished championship. Consequently, this decision led to the revival of the esteemed World Heavyweight title.
During a recent episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown, it was announced that the Women's Tag Team Titles and NXT Women's Tag Titles would be unified. In a fortnight on SmackDown, the NXT champions Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre would confront the main roster champions Shayna Baszler and Ronda Rousey in a monumental showdown.
On the aforementioned SmackDown, a new 'Women's Title' was bestowed upon Raw Women's Champion Asuka, featuring a design reminiscent of Reigns' new title belt, albeit with a white strap. This modification aimed to establish a sense of parity between the two championships and mitigate any perception of favoritism caused by the Raw-SmackDown dynamics influenced by the Draft.
Additionally, it was reported by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select that Rhea Ripley's championship would also undergo alterations, either in terms of a new name or a redesigned appearance. The report highlighted a particular source of frustration within the company, namely the "misuse of the term 'undisputed' in two cases." Despite Seth Rollins also holding a world championship, Roman Reigns' title was being referred to as the undisputed title, and Asuka's newly unveiled championship bore the term "undisputed" on its front, disregarding Rhea Ripley's status as a women's champion.
A senior figure within WWE acknowledged the perplexity caused by this decision, stating, "Admittedly, that is a confusing matter. I fail to comprehend the insistence on such an approach, and despite numerous concerns raised by many individuals, it has been dismissively disregarded."
