Prithviraj Sukumaran has teamed up with director Vysakh for Khalifa: Part 1 – The Intro, marking their first collaboration since the 2010 film Pokkiri Raja. Released on August 20, 2026, the film arrived with considerable expectations from the trade and fans alike. While the opening day collections indicate that mass-action entertainers still have a strong draw in the Malayalam market, the initial word of mouth from the audience has been mixed. This split in viewer opinion suggests that while Prithviraj's star power has ensured a steady start domestically and internationally, the sustainability of the film will depend on how it navigates this varied feedback over the weekend.
The film achieved a worldwide gross collection of 12.20 crore on its opening day. When we break these numbers down, the domestic market contributed an India gross of 6.20 crore, while the overseas markets performed exceptionally well, bringing in another 6 crore. In terms of net earnings in India, the movie collected 5.35 crore across 1,967 shows. This performance has officially made Khalifa the second-biggest opening in Prithviraj's career, surpassed only by the record-breaking 8.72 crore opening of Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life).
To put this into context within Prithviraj's career trajectory, Khalifa has comfortably moved past his other recent benchmarks. While Aadujeevitham remains at the top, Khalifa's 6.20 crore gross has pushed films like Guruvayoorambala Nadayil (4.26 crore), Kaduva (3.11 crore), and Gold (2.89 crore) further down the list of his top openers. For director Vysakh, this also marks a significant career high, reinforcing his reputation for delivering large-scale commercial entertainers that resonate with the Kerala box office (KBO).
The pre-release buzz was already evident in the advance booking numbers. Khalifa recorded a Kerala advance of 3.01 crore from 1,612 shows with an initial occupancy of over 36 percent. This ranks as the 6th biggest pre-sale of the year. While event films like Drishyam 3 (8.19 crore) and Patriot (5.66 crore) maintain the lead, Khalifa managed to hold its own against other major releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Jana Nayagan. Total ticket sales on BookMyShow hit 222.88K by the end of the first day, including pre-sales.
At the regional level, the occupancy rates told a story of a strong evening and night surge. The overall day one occupancy in Kerala stood at 40.97 percent, but the night shows spiked to 55.83 percent. Major urban centers were the primary drivers; Kochi recorded an overall occupancy of 71 percent across 211 shows, with night shows hitting a massive 91 percent. Kozhikode was even more impressive, recording 71.5 percent overall and peaking at 92 percent for night screenings. Other regions like Trivandrum held a steady 38.5 percent, while Bengaluru saw 22.8 percent occupancy across 191 shows.
The overseas performance was bolstered by a strong showing in the Oceania region. In Australia, the film opened with 46,000 Australian dollars, while New Zealand added another 8,000 New Zealand dollars. Combined with the 6 crore total overseas gross, it is clear that the Malayali diaspora has turned out in large numbers. With such a well-distributed opening across domestic and international circuits, it is expected the momentum will sustain over the coming weekend
