Q3 2026 Box Office Records: Biggest Records Broken and Unbeaten Between July and September

Indian cinemas collected approximately ₹2,692.22 Cr between July and September 2026, marking a 31.43% increase over Q2's ₹2,048.40 Cr. The quarter generated an additional ₹643.82 Cr, with August the only month to cross ₹1,000 Cr. While most pan-India all-time records remained intact, Q3 delivered several major language-specific, yearly and career milestones. Toxic, Hanuman Ansh and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit led the record-breaking performances.

Opening Day and Opening Weekend Records

Sandalwood Cinema: Toxic's Historic Opening

Yash's Toxic delivered Q3's biggest opening, collecting ₹101.10 Cr India net and ₹140.75 Cr worldwide on Day 1. Its performance established several major benchmarks across languages.

  • 6th biggest Indian opening day: ₹101.10 Cr India net, behind Pushpa 2, RRR, Baahubali 2, KGF: Chapter 2 and Dhurandhar 2.
  • Second original film above ₹100 Cr India net on Day 1, after RRR.
  • Biggest Hindi opening for a non-sequel South Indian film: ₹55 Cr net, second among all Hindi-dubbed South Indian openers behind Pushpa 2.
  • Highest Kannada-language opening: ₹23.30 Cr net, surpassing KGF: Chapter 2's ₹22.85 Cr.
  • 1.67 million BookMyShow presales: Seventh-highest overall and second-highest of 2026.

Kollywood and Tollywood Cinema: Major Opening Weekend Milestones

Jana Nayagan recorded the biggest Tamil opening weekend of 2026, earning ₹124.75 Cr net across four days, ahead of Karuppu's ₹113.85 Cr.

Meanwhile, The Paradise delivered Nani's first ₹100 Cr-plus India gross opening weekend, collecting approximately ₹109 Cr. It also became his highest-grossing worldwide release and established a career-best overseas opening.

Bollywood Cinema: Hanuman Ansh's Record-Breaking Theatrical Run

Unlike the quarter's front-loaded blockbusters, Hanuman Ansh built its records through sustained collections. Released on August 7, the devotional film maintained exceptional momentum well beyond its opening weeks, setting several Bollywood long-run benchmarks.

  • Top 5 in corresponding Bollywood daily collection rankings from Day 22 through the end of September.
  • Highest 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th weeks for a Bollywood film.
  • Highest 5th, 6th and 8th weekends, including ₹18.85 Cr net during its eighth weekend.

Its ability to sustain collections over multiple weeks made it one of Q3's most unusual box office successes.

Mollywood Cinema: Bethlehem Kudumba Unit Rewrites History

Starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit emerged as Q3's biggest Malayalam success. Reportedly made on a budget of around ₹23 Cr, the romantic comedy grew through sustained audience demand and established multiple industry records.

  • Highest-grossing Malayalam film worldwide: Surpassed Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra on Day 24 and crossed ₹300 Cr worldwide.
  • Second Malayalam film to cross ₹300 Cr worldwide.
  • Most-booked Malayalam film on BookMyShow among 2024-onwards releases: 65.65 lakh tickets, approximately 19% ahead of Lokah.
  • Highest-grossing film at the Kerala box office, overtaking Vaazha 2.
  • Highest-grossing South Indian film overseas in 2026: ₹138.45 Cr, second among Malayalam films behind L2: Empuraan.
  • New Malayalam overseas records in the USA and New Zealand, alongside Nivin Pauly's biggest worldwide grosser.

Regional Box Office Performance in Q3 2026

Hindi cinema led the domestic market, followed by Tamil and Telugu films. Malayalam collections climbed from ₹11.53 Cr in July to ₹132.67 Cr in August, while Irumudi became Ravi Teja's first ₹100 Cr worldwide grosser.

Major Records That Remained Unbroken

Despite several new milestones during Q3 2026, some of Indian cinema's biggest box office records remained untouched.

  • Biggest opening day in Indian cinema: Pushpa 2 retained the all-time record.
  • Biggest opening day of 2026: Dhurandhar 2 remained ahead of Toxic.
  • Biggest India opening for a Kannada-origin film: KGF: Chapter 2's ₹116 Cr net across all languages remained unbeaten, although Toxic broke its Kannada-language opening record.
  • Highest Malayalam overseas collection: L2: Empuraan retained the all-time record despite Bethlehem Kudumba Unit's strong international performance.
  • Biggest Tamil opening-day benchmarks: Leo and Coolie continued to hold leading positions on the Tamil opening-day charts.

Overall, Q3 2026 was defined less by new pan-India opening records and more by exceptional performances within individual industries. Toxic dominated the opening charts, while Hanuman Ansh and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit demonstrated how sustained theatrical demand could rewrite box office history.
