Santos Escobar has revealed what happened when he nearly walked away from WWE in 2025, claiming Nick Khan personally called him after his contract expired, apologized for how his character had been handled and promised that WWE would do things differently. Escobar said Khan also told him he would sit down with Triple H to work out his future, and those assurances ultimately convinced him to re-sign with the company.
Escobar discussed the situation during his first sit-down interview since leaving WWE on TMZ’s Inside the Ring. The former NXT Cruiserweight Champion had spent years with WWE as the leader of Legado del Fantasma before moving to the main roster, where his run included time with the LWO and a feud with Rey Mysterio. By October 2025, Escobar was prepared to move on. Rather than signing another WWE contract before his existing agreement ended, he allowed the deal to expire and became a free agent.
Escobar explained that WWE then moved quickly to bring him back, with Nick Khan personally getting involved in the situation. “I have a legal team and if you remember I let my contract expire in October. I was ready to part ways and, you know, see what was out there. Nick Khan called me himself. He apologized for the way they had treated my character, not myself, my character.”
According to Escobar, Khan didn't simply ask him to return. He says the WWE President promised that the company would change how his character was being handled and offered to arrange a meeting with Triple H. “And he said, ‘We’re going to do it right. We’re going to do things right. I want to give you anything you need to thrive, to prosper, and I’ll sit you down with Triple H. We’ll get things squared and we’ll get going.’ And that’s the reason why I re-signed back then.”
Escobar said the turnaround happened quickly. He recalled becoming a free agent at midnight and receiving WWE's call around 1 or 2 p.m. the following day. With WWE actively trying to bring him back and Khan laying out plans for another run, Escobar believed the company still saw a future for him.
That became one reason his eventual release was so unexpected. “So, I had no reason to believe this was going to end anytime soon. I hadn’t even started my run.”
