Beijing, August 23 - The Sci-fi-comedy film Moon Man has brought back the China box office on track after the country announced a fresh lockdown amid the rising covid-19 cases earlier this year. It led to the number of cinemas shutting down their doors which directly affected film's box office which was booming before that. ## "Moon Man", which was released on July 29, opened to a huge $144 million nationwide over the opening weekend, the third highest weekend of the year and the highest non-holiday weekend of 2022. With strong positive reviews, the movie has just hit $400 million at the Mainland China box office. ## The strong box office performance of "Moon Man" came at a time when some cinemas are still closed or opening gradually and seating capacity limitations remained in place in others. It is directed by Zhang Chiyu, who previously directed the 2017 sports comedy hit "Never Say Die".## "Moon Man" has been one of the most anticipated Chinese films of the year and more than 1.4 million movie fans rated the film as a "want to see" on China's online ticking platforms prior to its release, according to Variety. The film has won outstanding feedback from audiences with a score of 9.4 and 9.5 on Maoyan and Taopiaopiao, respectively. ## The film tells the story of "the last human in the universe" as an astronaut finds himself stranded on the moon after an asteroid wipes out life on earth. According to Variety, the film's crew laid 200 tons of sand and gravel across a 6,000-square-meter space spanning 15 studios and built a full-scale model of a lunar base. Los Angeles, August 22 - Actor Nikhil Siddhartha's mystical action adventure film Karthikeya 2 has joined the top Telugu grosser at the USA box office in 2022. The movie is having a sensational run at the domestic as well as overseas box office, becoming a huge blockbuster. ## Directed by Chandoo Mondeti, "Karthikeya 2" has crossed the coveted $1 million gross mark in the USA, becoming the 9th Telugu movie in 2022 to achieve the feat. The last film to reach the milestone was Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur's recently released blockbuster "Sita Ramam", which has so far grossed $1.22 million over there. ## "Karthikeya 2" reached the $1 million mark in the USA on Sunday, taking just 9 days to get there. Hyderabad, August 21 - After two months of pause, the Telugu film industry is back in the action and is on a potential long ride. Putting this in simple words - the largest South Indian film industry is flying high with the support of three back-to-back box office blockbusters, all coming in this month called August. ## The industry was in a dire need of one big hit to kick-start the process, and it got two not just one in the form of "Sita Ramam" and "Bimbisara". A week later joining these two films was actor Nikhil Siddhartha's "Karthikeya 2", which is simply going overdrive and proving to be a force to reckon with no sign of dropping anytime soon. ## While the aforementioned three films are going strong, the Telugu industry has one more, if not many, potential blockbuster in August in the form of Vijay Deverakonda and director Puri Jagannadh's much-anticipated sports action drama film, "Liger". Scheduled to release on August 25, the movie is carrying a very good buzz and it is almost certain to open big at the Telugu box office. ## "Liger" is a Pan India film, shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu. It is co-produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions so the makers have taken the Hindi market very seriously, in fact, they started the promotion by visiting multiple North Indian cities. The Hindi version may not take as big an opening as the Telugu version, but it can be the most productive in the long run if received very well. ## Personally, the thing which is exciting to me is the extra confidence Vijay Deverakonda (who recently quoted a minimum of 200 crores earning of the film) is showing in the movie. Of course, the cat will be out of the hat when the movie officially will get released, but it is very important for the involved people to back their product wholeheartedly which is exactly what VD is doing without putting his head down for a second. ## The stakes involved in "Liger" are comparatively high than the previous films, but so is the confidence of the makers and buzz around the film and this should extend the dominance of Telugu cinema at the box office. It also stars Ananya Pandey as the female lead along with Ramya Krishnan and Ronit Roy in important roles. It has now crossed Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War at the domestic (North America) box office. ## Directed by Joseph Kosinski, "Top Gun 2" grossed a strong $1.6 million on its 13th Friday, pushing total domestic cume to $679.1 million, and with this, it has surpassed "Avengers: Infinity War's" $678.8 million lifetime collection to become the 6th highest-grossing film of all-time at the North American box office. ## The sequel to Cruise's "Top Gun" (1986) is looking to score over $5 million in its 13th weekend as it is hoping to finish over a $700 million domestic lifetime run.## Highest-grossing films in North America (without inflation) - ## 1. Hyderabad, August 20 - Telugu mystical action-adventure film, Karthikeya 2 is on a dream run at the box office. The movie, starring Nikhil Siddharth in the title role, had a limited release but went on to outshine other new releases to become a massive blockbuster within a week. ## "Karthikeya 2" was released on Saturday (August 13) and opened to super positive reviews and word of mouth. It scored 5.04 crores net on the first day and went on to finish the first full week (7 days) with approx. 36 crores net, including both Telugu and Hindi languages.## The movie was valued at approx. 13 crores worldwide and it has already scored over 28 crores Share the collection, including 18.7 crores share in Telugu states (AP/TG). It became the highest-grossing film for actor Nikhil in just 4 days and there is not stopping it at the moment. ## Meanwhile, the dubbed Hindi version of the movie is showing no sign of taking a back seat. The Hindi version opened with just 7 lakh on the first day but thanks to positive word of mouth, it grew exponentially throughout the first week and never dropped at once in the first 7 days. It closed the full opening week scoring 2.46 crores net. The total Hindi net collection is 8.21 crores.## The growth of film in the Hindi language can be understood by the number of shows it added over the week. It was released on just 55 shows by the 7th day, it had over 3000 shows and is increasing rapidly with each passing hour. In addition to under its further growth, K2 outscored outright Bollywood biggies, "Laal Singh Chaddha" and "Raksha Bandhan's" combined total yesterday (August 19). ## The worldwide gross total of "Karthikeya 2" is approx. 50 crores, including 7 crores at the overseas box office. Mumbai, August 19 - Bollywood superstars Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar's Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan, respectively have completed an extended opening week at the box office and numbers are something that industry had never thought about. ## The combined collection of both the films is around 90 crores net, which is not even close to what trade had predicated before the release. ## "Laal Singh Chaddha", which is the remake of the Hollywood classic hit "Forrest Gump", has been a bigger disappointment as its first-week collection (~ 50 cr) couldn't even cross the opening day numbers of Aamir Khan's last film "Thugs of Hindostan" which scored 50.75 crores net in 2018. ## Directed by Advait Chandan, the overseas collection of the film is somehow respectable with close to 50 crores gross (not final) but the domestic box office is forgettable, to say the least. The negativity around the film before its release also played a massive role in its disastrous fate even though the reception for the film was mixed. ## On the other hand, Akshay Kumar-fronted "Raksha Bandhan" too couldn't get going despite the positive word of mouth. The stakes for the film were low but it still performed underwhelmingly, especially knowing the fact that it has a perfect holiday period to outshine the underfire LSC. As a result, RB scored approx. 39 crores net while the overseas collection is approx. 8 crores, for the worldwide gross total of the film at 54 crores after 8 days. ## The Bollywood industry has now pinned its hopes on the next big release, which is director Ayan Mukerji's magnum opus "Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva".
