Bollywood Box Office Report: 2021

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, Jan 7, 2022: The cinemas remained shut for most of 2021 due to Covid 19 but things were back to normal with the release of Sooryavanshi on Diwali 2021. There was a total of 73 films released in 2021 and 32 of them were theatrical releases. Those 32 films have contributed around 550cr collections at the box office which is a fair result as there is something in the bag rather than nothing. These 32 films also include the dubbed version of Allu Arjun starrer Pushpa: The Rise. ## The Biggest plus of the year was the business of Sooryavanshi and dubbed version collections of Pushpa. Released on Diwali, The Akshay Kumar fronted Sooryavanshi was the first film that brought back the audience to the theatres in a big way if we ignore the dubbed version of Pushpa which is a non-Hindi film. With collections of around 196cr - Sooryavanshi has become the Biggest Grosser of the Hindi film industry. ## After Sooryavanshi, the only other film which did decent business was Salman Khan and Ayush Sharma starrer Antim: The Final Truth with collections of around 40 Cr. After this, there was a Tadap that had done okayish business with 26cr collections. Tadap was the launch of Suniel Shetty Son Ahan Shetty and according to that, the business is decent. ## The Biggest disappointments of the year were the rejection of big films like Satyamev Jayate2, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, and 83. While John Abraham starrer Satyamev Jayate2 was expected to put big box office figures as the first part was a huge hit, Ayushman Khurrana's Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui was expected to draw a premium multiplex audience due to its premise but both the films have failed to live onto the expectations. The big Xmas event film of the year starring Ranveer Singh - "83" was expected to challenge the numbers of Sooryavanshi but the film has failed to do that with just 95cr collections till now and nothing is coming from the theatres now as the cinemas across many states got shut. ## There were some Hindi films which released in February and March like Mumbai Saga And Roohi. Roohi had collected around 22crs at the box office while Mumbai Saga did 17cr approx business. ## The Top 5 Highest Hindi Net Grossers Of The Year ## 1. Sooryavanshi: 195.55 Cr ## 2. 83: 95 Cr (running) ## 3. Pushpa(Hindi): 70 Cr (running) ## 4. Antim: 39.57 Cr ## 5. Bell Bottom - 33.31 Cr ## Stay tuned.

Covid-19 Surge Has Spoilt The Party For The Resurgent Box-Office

BY SACNILK

New Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS) With the shadow of a third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic lengthening, the Indian film fraternity is taking measured steps to deal with the looming threat of disruption of business.## Production houses have already started pushing back the releases of upcoming films.## The first to feel the heat was the Shahid Kapoor-led cricket drama 'Jersey'. It was followed by the postponement of the period epic, S.S. Rajamouli's 'RRR', and then came to the news on Tuesday that the Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Prithviraj', which stoked a political controversy even before its release, has also been put on the backburner.## In a conversation with IANS, trade analyst Karan Taurani of Elara Capital said: "Producers of big-budget films will be averse to taking risks in the present situation".## With Delhi shutting down cinema theatres and multiplexes, Haryana following suit in five districts up till January 12, and Tamil Nadu and West Bengal imposing a 50 percent occupancy limit (like Maharashtra before them), the box-office, which was in a state of euphoria after the successes of 'Pushpa: The Rise', 'Sooryavanshi' and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', has slipped back into a state of semi-paralysis.## Taurani says he doesn't see a major film release happening anytime soon. "They are all postponing," he said. "For the next three months, I see no releases being announced. I believe normality will return only after April".## The postponement of films will have a domino effect on the theatrical calendar of 2022, independent film trade analyst Sumit Kadel said. "For instance, the postponement of 'Prithviraj' will impact other releases of Yash Raj Films, such as 'Shamshera' and 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar'".## The third wave, according to Kadel, will last till February-March, which in turn will result in the postponement of more films. "The entire calendar will have to be reshuffled for sure," Kadel added.## Taurani expects the big-budget films to suffer because their interest cost goes up with each delayed-release. "They might have to come again to the exhibitors to ask for a higher distributor's share or make some other arrangements," Taurani pointed out.## But he ended on a note of hope. "It won't be as bad as it was during the second wave," he said. It's a hope that is being nurtured by everyone associated with the cinema business across the country.## Stay tuned...

Box Office 2021: Hollywood Dominated The Worldwide Box Office During The Second Pandemic Year

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, January 4 - The Hollywood film industry once again came to the rescue as far as the worldwide box office is concerned. The industry of superheroes shouldered the responsibility to keep the show running during the entire covid-19 pandemic, along with China.## After no so the great year of 2020, Hollywood released tentpole titles in the following year and had success with most of them. Quite fittingly, the year 2021 ended with the biggest grosser of the pandemic era, "Spider-Man: No Way Home", which was also the first and only film of 2020 and 2021 to cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office. ## Tom Holland's "Spider-Man: No Way Home" wasn't the only Hollywood title that ruled the worldwide box office. Among the top 5 biggest grosser of 2021 globally, 3 Hollywood films found themselves on the list. Apart from "No Way Home", the other two titles were "James Bond - No Time To Die", and "Fast & Furious 9". ## "No Way Home", which was released on December 15 in some of the overseas markets, has so far grossed $1.37 billion, including $613M domestically (North America), and $759M overseas. James Bond "No Time To Die", which was the 4th biggest film of 2021, had grossed $774 million worldwide. More than domestic, where it grossed $160.7M, "No Time To Die", performed strongly outside North America with $613.2 million.## "Fast & Furious 9" was the fifth biggest global grosser of 2021. It was the first Hollywood film to break $500 million worldwide in 2021. Released in the month of June, "F9" earned $173 million domestically while overseas, it grossed $553.2 million, for a total worldwide gross of $726.2 million. ## Meanwhile, the number 2 and 3 spots of the biggest box office grosser were taken by China's films. The war epic film "The Battle at Lake Changjin" grossed $904 million and was the biggest film until "Spider-Man: No Way Home" overtook it. Chinese comedy film "Hi, Mom" was the 3rd biggest with $822 million at the global box office. ## Stay tuned...

Box Office 2021: Tollywood Dethrone Bollywood To Emerge The Indian Box Office King

BY SACNILK

Hyderabad, January 4 - The Telugu cinema, for the first time in many many years, had had a bigger impact on the Indian box office than the mighty Bollywood, which has ruled the Indian biz over the years. The lack of Bollywood content helped the second largest film industry of India, Tollywood to keep the show running in 2021. ## In 2021, there were a total of 471 (+) films released in theaters in India. The theatrical releases in 2021 generated approx Rs. 3200 crores gross in India, approx +60% than 2020. Marvel/Sony's superhero film "Spider-Man: No Way Home" emerged as the biggest grosser of 2021 in India with Rs. 240 crores, followed by Akshay Kumar's "Sooryavanshi" with Rs. 230.8 crores. ## However, it was the Telugu film industry, which dominated the Indian box office biz. In 2021, a total of 175 (+) Telugu titles were released in theaters and generated Rs. 1070 crores gross, including the Telugu versions of other films, in India. Allu Arjun's "Pushpa - The Rise" led the Telugu biz with a gross collection of Rs. 150 crores in 2021 in India. Pawan Kalyan's "Vakeel Saab" was the second biggest Telugu title with Rs. 127 crores. ## It was not all doom and gloom for the Hindi cinema. The largest film industry in the country, Bollywood found some life towards the end of 2021, when "Sooryavanshi" was released along with Hindi dubbed titles of "Pusha - The Rise", and "Spider-Man: No Way Home". "Sooryavanshi" emerged as the biggest Bollywood hit since Ajay Devgn's "Tanjaji" in January 2020. The Rohit Shetty-directed grossed Rs. 230.8 crores in India, and was the biggest Indian title of 2021 at the worldwide box office with Rs. 293 crores. ## Last year, a total of 55 films (+) were released in Hindi, including dubbed versions, and grossed approx Rs. 760 crores in India, making the Hindi version the second largest after Telugu to contribute to the Indian box office. Tamil, which saw a mega-hit in the form of Thalapathy Vijay's "Master", was the third biggest in terms of box office contributor in Indian in 2021. ## The Tamil version saw as many as 93 titles (+), which generated approx Rs. 700 crore gross in 2021 in India. "Master" along with Rajinikanth's "Annaatthe" were the two Tamil films that grossed over Rs. 100 crores in India alone. Sivakarthikeyan's "Doctor" was the third biggest Tamil title of 2021. It grossed Rs. 100.50 crores worldwide, including Rs. 80.50 crores at the Indian box office (both Tamil and Telugu versions). ## The Kannada film industry too had something to show in its CV in 2021. There were 77 films (+) released in the Kannada language and grossed Rs. 244 crores in India. Darshan's "Roberrt" was the biggest Kannada title with a gross total of Rs. 69.50 crores. The Malayalam film industry has had a dismal show in 2021, in which most of the Malayalam films took direct-to-digital routes via various OTT platforms. Only 41 (+) Malalayam titles were released in 2021, which could contribute only approx Rs. 170 crores. ## Stay tuned...

Spider-Man: No Way Home Becomes 3rd Hollywood Film To Cross Rs. 200 Crores Net In India

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, January 3 - Tom Holland's "Spider-Man: No Way Home" becomes only the 3rd Hollywood film to reach Rs. 200 crores (Rs. 202.34 cr) net in India, after "Avengers: Endgame" (Rs.373.05 cr), and "Avengers: Infinity War" (Rs. 228.50 cr). Interestingly, all three films belong to Marvel, which is the most loved movie brand in India. ## The finale of Holland's Home Coming trilogy, "No Way Home" has given a new lease of life to India's exhibition sector. It is only the second title of 2021 to reach Rs. 200 crores net mark, after Telugu blockbuster "Pushpa - The Rise", which was released a day after "No Way Home" on December 17, and currently stands at Rs. 207 crores India net. ## "No Way Home", meanwhile, opened to the third biggest box office numbers in India for a 2021's title. It netted Rs. 32.67 crores on the first day, and went on to register Rs. 108.27 crores (Rs. 138.63 cr. gross) over the extended 4-day opening weekend, followed by Rs. 148.07 crores net (Rs. 188.04 crores gross) for a full first week. ## From the second weekend onwards, "No Way Home" faced stiff competition from sports biopic, "83", especially in the multiplexes. However, despite the competition, the superhero movie did very well to stay afloat and generate Rs. 41.60 crores net in the second week. It continued to invite footfalls over the new year's weekend and score Rs. 12.67 crores in the 3rd weekend, for a total India net to Rs. 202.34 crores, and Rs. 256.97 crores gross for all languages (English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu). ## "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is likely to extend its strong run at the Indian box office since there is no big release until Ajith Kumar's blockbuster "Valimai" on Jan. 13. It will, however, be interesting to see whether it could reach Rs. 300 crores gross at the Indian box office, knowing the fact that many Indian states, especially in the North, are imposing new restrictions on theaters due to the rising covid-19 cases in the country. ## Stay tuned...
