Pixar Animation Studios has achieved a significant milestone with its latest original feature, Hoppers. The film launched globally with an impressive $88 million opening weekend, comfortably surpassing previous industry projections. This performance is a major breakthrough for the studio, as it marks the biggest opening weekend for an original animated film since the 2017 hit Coco. In a theatrical landscape recently dominated by franchises and sequels, Hoppers has proven that original concepts still carry significant drawing power.
The global launch was led by a solid performance in the domestic market (North America), where the film collected $46 million. International territories contributed another $42 million to the opening tally, bringing the total worldwide gross to $88 million. In India, the film saw a steady start, recording a rough gross collection of approximately ₹3.50 crore over its first four days days. While modest compared to established IPs, the steady footfall suggests a positive reception among urban family audiences in the country.
The success of Hoppers comes at a critical juncture for Pixar. Following the pandemic-era decision to release Soul, Luca, and Turning Red directly to Disney+, the studio faced a period of brand dilution and mixed theatrical results with titles like Lightyear and Elio. However, after Inside Out 2 became the studio's highest-grossing film of all time in 2024, Pixar CCO Pete Docter announced a shift toward clear mass appeal storytelling. Hoppers appears to be the first major beneficiary of this pivot, balancing high-concept technology with the broad, accessible humor that defines modern animation.

Directed by Daniel Chong—the creator of the hit series We Bare Bears—and produced by Nicole Paradis Grindle, the film centers on a young animal lover named Mabel. Using a groundbreaking mind-transfer technology, Mabel hops her consciousness into a realistic robotic beaver to infiltrate the animal kingdom and save them from a local threat. The voice cast features Piper Curda as Mabel, Bobby Moynihan as George the robotic beaver, and Jon Hamm as an ambitious Mayor who serves as the story's antagonist.
As Pixar continues to navigate an identity crisis in a post-Spider-Verse world, the commercial success of Hoppers offers a ray of hope for the studio's future original slate. With positive audience word-of-mouth and a strong debut, the film is expected to maintain steady legs throughout the spring. Sustaining this momentum will be crucial in establishing a balance between the studio's autobiographical roots and its current focus on broad commercial viability.
