Kochi, May 5 - The Malayalam film industry is on the rise and performing above its shoulders at the box office over the last 12 months or so. Since last year, Mollywood has delivered five 100+ crores grossers out of total 7 films at the worldwide box office, and it began with 2018. ## The Tovino Thomas-led real-life inspired disaster survival thriller turns 1 year old today (May 5) with a history behind it. The movie is based on the severe 2018 Kerala floods that devastated the state, and at the same time, shows the grit and resilience of the people to help each other. ## Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, 2018 turned into a phenomenon at the box office not just in Kerala but also in the rest of the domestic market and overseas. It became only the third Malayalam movie to top 100 crores gross and the first to surpass 150 crores gross worldwide at that time. ## 2018 showed the potential of Mollywood Cinema at the box office. Mumbai, May 4 - Kartik Aaryan has begun preparation for the biographical sports drama film Chandu Champion, directed by Kabir Khan. The movie is about a man who faced one adversary after another with an undying spirit. His unwavering zeal and never-give-up attitude led to India's first individual gold medal in any form of the Olympics. ## On Saturday (May 4), Kartik shared a picture while dubbing for the trailer of Chandu Champion and with this, the actor re-confirmed the release of the movie which is June 14, 2024. It will be the first major Bollywood release since Eid this year. ## Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala's Naidadwala Grandson Entertainment, Chandu Champion will be having some pressure to deliver at the box office. Chennai, May 4 - Actor and filmmaker Sundar C's 4th instalment of the horror-comedy franchise Aranmanai has taken a good start at the domestic box office, scoring the second biggest opening for a Tamil title in 2024. ## Starring Tamannaah Bhatia, and Raashii Khanna in the leading roles, Aranmanai 4 grossed approximately 5.25 crores on its opening day in India in Tamil and Telugu languages. The Tamil version alone minted an estimated 4.75 crores gross while the Telugu version scored around 55 lakh gross. ## The opening of Aranmanai 4 is the second biggest for a Tamil title in 2024 after Dhanush's Captain Miller which minted approximately 10 crores gross opening day. It has beaten the likes of Lal Salaam, and Ayalaan. Thalapathy Vijay's Ghilli, which had a re-release on April 20, grossed around 4.75 crores in India on its first day and is currently the third biggest opener of the year.## The initial word of mouth for Aranmanai 4 is good and the movie is already showing strong hold on its second day. Mumbai, May 4 - Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor have reunited for Dharma Productions' romantic-comedy Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. The movie is directed by Shashank Khaitan and it also stars Sanya Malhotra, Akshay Oberoi and Rohit Saraf in pivotal roles. ## On Saturday (May 4), the shooting for SSKTK commenced with both Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor joining the schedule. The film is touted to be a fun-filled romantic comedy, along the lines of the Dulhania film series. It is said to be a vibrant celebration of love infused with music, larger-than-life sets, and a stellar cast. ## The first schedule of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari kicked off in Mumbai, the makers will head to Rajasthan and some other locations for the next schedules. The filming of the movie is expected to be wrapped up by the year-end as the makers have scheduled it for an April 18, 2025, release. ## Varun Dhawan, meanwhile, will next be seen in the action drama Baby John, scheduled to release in June/July this year. Kochi, May 4 - Director Chidambaram's survival thriller Manjummel Boys has almost completed its journey in theatres but not before setting the box office on fire. A year which will be written in the golden letters for Mollywood, Manjummel Boys emerged the king of it. ## Released on February 22, Manjummel Boys emerged as the biggest Malayalam blockbuster of the 21st century and also became the first and only (to date) Mollywood title to surpass 200 crores gross collection at the worldwide box office. ## The movie has truly been a sensation since its release not only in the home market, Kerala but also in the rest of India and overseas. Chennai, May 4 - There seems to be one last change in the release dates before the Indian summer box office kicks off with a bang. ## As the Indian box office is looking to rebound from the lean couple of months, the makers of Pan India movies are locking dates to give the best shot at the box office. Veteran Kamal Haasan's vigilante action Indian 2, directed by Shankar, was announced on June 13/14 for box office hunting. ## While the makers are still to make any changes to the release date of Indian 2, rumours are hitting social media stating the postponement of it. The rumours say that the much-awaited Pan-Indian flick has been postponed to July, however, there is no reliable confirmation on the same yet. ## Indian 2, the sequel to 1996 Indian, has been in the making for a long time and it has already been postponed multiple times. Lyca Productions production recently set a June 2024 release for the movie and with just over 1 month to go for its worldwide launch, there is a possibility of its postponement for one more time. ## If Indian 2 skips the June release, Prabhas-fronted Kalki 2898 AD would be the first Pan India blockbuster to arrive on the big screen to start the summer season. Los Angeles, May 4 - Warner Bros. Pictures' post-apocalyptic action adventure film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is ready to roll its arm at the box office coming 24 May. The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) could be a winner as per the early box office projection. ## According to Deadline, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth-fronted blockbuster is tracking to earn $40 million - $50 million over the 4-day domestic opening weekend at the domestic (North America) box office. The report says that it could edge out Sony/Alcon Entertainment's animated Garfield which is tracking a $35 million opening in the same weekend. ## Deadline reports that Furiosa has the benefit of being an Imax and PLFs and a Cannes Film Festival world premiere as a global loudspeaker which gives it a shot at $40+ million start from earlier projection of $30+ million, same as Garfield. ## Directed by George Miller, Furiosa could also turn into a surprise winner at the Indian box office. Mad Max: Fury Road grossed around 15 crores in India in 2015. In recent times, Hollywood movies have done well in India and with Chris Hemsworth, who has a genuine fan following among the Indian audiences, Furiosa could start well. Mumbai, May 3 - Superstar Yash has commenced the filming of his first film since the mega-blockbuster KGF: Chapter 2 (2022). Titled Toxic, the movie is being directed by National-award winning filmmaker Geetu Mohandas and produced by Yash under his banner Monster Mind Creations in association with KVN Productions. ## Toxic is a pan-India movie and the makers are in the process of locking a blockbuster casting from across industries. Kiara Advani has been roped in to play the female lead opposite Yash. Meanwhile, Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor was supposed to play the role of Yash's sister in the movie but there seem to be some changes. ## According to the report by Pinkvilla, Kareena Kapoor has opted out from Toxic due to the date issues and the makers are now in advanced talks with lady superstar Nayanthara to play the role. It is said that Nayanthara has shown her interest in doing Toxic and the logistics are being figured out at this point. ## Toxic is a keenly-awaited film that is touted to be a solid content-driven film with mass elements. Apart from Kiara and Nayanthara, the movie will feature strong female characters which will be revealed soon. The movie was officially announced in December last year and the shoot began recently. Chennai, May 3 - Thalapathy Vijay's sports action drama film Ghilli is having an excellent re-run and has broken into the 30 crores mark at the worldwide box office. It is already one of the highest-grossing Tamil movies of the year. ## The movie has grossed around 24.25 crores in India in 13 days so far. From the second Monday-Thursday (4 days), it minted approximately 4-4.25 crores gross which is an excellent hold. At the overseas box office, the blockbuster has grossed approximately 6.50 crores, pushing the total worldwide collection to around 30.75 crores gross. ## Ghilli will cross Rajinikanth's Lal Salaam's lifetime collection of 33 crores in the coming days to become the 3rd highest-grossing Tamil movie of 2024 at the worldwide box office. It has already crossed Lal Salaam's domestic total of 21 crores. ## As reported earlier, Ghilli is already the highest-grossing re-release film in India in the 21st century, after beating James Cameron's Avatar 3D which minted 18 crores back in 2012. Mumbai, May 3 - Heist comedy Crew is heading for a finish of over 80 crores net after the solid hold in its 5th week. Starring Tabu, Kriti Sanon, and Kareena Kapoor, the movie is getting benefitted from the lean phase of new movies. ## Directed by Rajesh Krishnan, Crew minted approximately 3 crores net, dropping around 24% in its 5th week. The movie had the strongest hold in the last week in its box office run so far and it is expected to maintain the same trend in the next couple of weeks. ## The total net collection of the film is approximately 78.80 crores while the gross collection is around 93.25 crores in 35 days. Overseas, Crew has grossed an estimated 55 crores, pushing the total worldwide cume to over 148 crores. Mumbai, May 3 - Aamir Khan's production venture, Laapataa Ladies was released theatrically on March 1st before going to digital after the 8 weeks of the box office run. However, in a positive indication, the movie witnessed a minor jump in its 9th week after the OTT release. ## Directed by Kiran Rao, Laapataa Ladies has been hailed as one of the best Indian films of 2024 but the lack of star power proved a roadblock in its box office journey. However, after the spread of word of mouth due to the OTT release, the movie has witnessed an upward trend at the box office. ## In its 9th week, the rural comedy-drama jumped by around 10% but the overall collection remained low with approximately 37 lakh.
