Vvan Release Date Announced: Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia to Headline TVF's Massive Folklore Thriller Slated for Raksha Bandhan 2026

Vvan, the highly anticipated folklore-driven thriller, has officially locked its theatrical release date, marking one of the most significant creative collaborations in recent Indian cinema history. Jointly produced by Ektaa R Kapoor's Balaji Motion Pictures and the content powerhouse TVF (The Viral Fever), the film is set to hit the big screens on August 28, 2026, coinciding with the Raksha Bandhan holiday weekend. This project represents a strategic pivot for Sidharth Malhotra into the rooted storytelling space, a genre that has recently revitalized the Indian box office with hits like Kantara and Munjya. By choosing a prime holiday window, the makers are clearly eyeing a high-volume theatrical run, leveraging the long weekend to maximize family footfalls across the country. The core plot of Vvan follows the journey of a rational urban man who returns to his ancestral village, only to find himself at odds with the local myths. In a moment of defiance, he enters the village's forbidden forest and inadvertently awakens a divine goddess. This action forces him to confront supernatural powers that defy his logical worldview, eventually transforming him into an unlikely savior tasked with protecting his people from total annihilation. The urban vs. folklore dynamic has proven to be a goldmine for the theatrical ecosystem lately, and Vvan appears to be designed to tap into that exact sentiment—blending high-concept mythology with modern thriller elements. From a market perspective, the directorial pedigree of Vvan is its biggest USP. The film is being helmed by Arunabh Kumar and Deepak Kumar Mishra—the creative masterminds behind TVF's most successful ventures, including the critically acclaimed Panchayat. Deepak Kumar Mishra's ability to capture the soul of rural India is expected to bring an authentic, desi flavor to this thriller, which is crucial for the success of folklore-based films. This marks TVF's ambitious transition from digital dominance to the massive theatrical canvas, backed by Balaji's robust distribution and marketing machinery. For the trade, this is a wait and watch scenario to see if the TVF brand of storytelling can replicate its OTT success on the big screen. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The track record of Arunabh Kumar and Deepak Kumar Mishra is a significant alpha for Vvan. Their flagship series, Panchayat, wasn't just a show; it was a market disruptor that broke the trend of dark OTT content with a clean, heartfelt narrative. Season 3 topped the 2024 charts as India's most-watched show with 28.2 million viewers, while the recent Season 4 (June 2025) cemented its cultural phenomenon status with over 7.8 million rapid views. This duo has mastered the art of viral rural marketing—famously seen in the Lauki (Bottle Gourd) campaign that generated 11 million impressions—proving they have a unique ability to bridge the urban-rural divide. For a folklore thriller like Vvan, this proven skill set in capturing the soul of Bharat is exactly what the theatrical market currently demands. The casting of Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia adds a layer of mass-plus-class appeal to the project. Sidharth Malhotra, after his gritty outings in Yodha and Indian Police Force, is exploring a more vulnerable and culturally grounded character here. On the other hand, Tamannaah Bhatia is currently enjoying a golden run in the supernatural/horror genre, following the massive success of Stree 2 and Aranmanai 4. Her involvement in Vvan further solidifies her position as the go-to star for folklore-driven narratives. With the Raksha Bandhan 2026 date now blocked, the film will face the typical holiday box office rush, but the unique Force of the Forest theme gives it a distinct identity in a crowded release calendar. The strategic positioning of Vvan places it directly within the rooted folklore trend that has dominated the Indian box office recently. Trade analysts are already drawing strong parallels to the success models of films like Munjya and Karthikeya 2, which combined regional mythology with high-stakes thrills to deliver massive returns on investment. Given that Ektaa R Kapoor is coming off the back of the folklore-heavy success of Munjya, Vvan appears to be a natural evolution of that strategy—leveraging temple-centric mysteries and ancestral legends to tap into the Hindi heartland's growing appetite for Desi supernatural narratives. By moving away from standard urban tropes and into the mystical Force of the Forest, the film is eyeing a trajectory that prioritizes cultural resonance over generic action.

Bhoot Bhangla and Vvan: Balaji Motion Pictures Reshuffles 2026 Release Dates to Avoid Akshay Kumar vs Sidharth Malhotra Clash

Balaji Motion Pictures, led by Ektaa R. Kapoor, is gearing up for a monumental year in 2026 with two of its most high-profile projects. The production house has officially set the stage for the highly anticipated horror-comedy Bhoot Bhangla and the mysterious folk-thriller Vvan. These films represent a strategic blend of nostalgic superstar reunions and fresh, acclaimed directorial talent, aiming to capture a wide spectrum of the Indian audience. Originally, Balaji Motion Pictures had planned for both Bhoot Bhangla and Vvan to hit theaters on the same day, May 15, 2026. However, according to a report by Bollywood Hungama, this release strategy has been revised. The source noted that since the Akshay Kumar and Tabu starrer Bhoot Bhangla—directed by Priyadarshan—was pushed from its initial April 3 slot to May 15, it was deemed impractical for Ekta Kapoor to release two major home productions on the same day. Consequently, the Sidharth Malhotra-led Vvan has been rescheduled to a new date, which is currently being kept under wraps. The makers are expected to officially reveal this secret new release date on the film's highly anticipated first look poster today. Bhoot Bhangla marks the historic reunion of Megastar Akshay Kumar and legendary director Priyadarshan after a 14-year hiatus. The duo, responsible for cult classics like Hera Pheri and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, is returning to the horror-comedy genre—a space they practically defined for modern Bollywood. Adding immense acting weight to the project is Tabu, who has become a synonymous name with box-office success in this genre, alongside the talented Wamiqa Gabbi. The film is officially scheduled for a grand release on May 15, 2026, and is expected to be a major summer blockbuster. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})   Simultaneously, the spotlight is on Vvan, a project that has generated massive intrigue since its initial announcement. Starring Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia, the film marks the feature film directorial debut of Deepak Mishra, the mastermind behind the globally acclaimed Panchayat series. Vvan is described as a grounded folk-thriller, a genre that has seen a massive surge in popularity recently. In a significant update for fans, the official release date for this atmospheric thriller is expected to be announced today, January 16, 2026. The trade circuit is buzzing with high expectations for both films. Bhoot Bhangla is seen as a sure-shot winner given the proven track record of the Akshay-Priyadarshan combination. On the other hand, Vvan is being hailed as a potential dark horse, with Deepak Mishra's transition from OTT excellence to the silver screen being one of the most watched developments of the year. With these two juggernauts, Balaji Motion Pictures is firmly positioning itself at the forefront of the 2026 theatrical race.

Dhurandhar to Sholay:9 Films Where Villains Overshadowed the Film's protagonist

The hero fights, the hero wins, and the hero takes the glory. But every once in a while, an actor flips the script—not on paper, but in the hearts of the audience. The internet is currently in a meltdown over Dhurandhar, where history seems to be repeating itself in the most spectacular fashion. While Ranveer Singh brings his trademark energy to the screen, it is Akshaye Khanna who has walked away with the film's soul. Critics and audiences alike are calling Khanna's performance dark, electric, and terrifying, noting how his calculated madness has completely overshadowed the protagonist. It is a rare feat to outshine a powerhouse like Ranveer, but Akshaye's sinister portrayal is being hailed as a career-best, reminding us of the golden rule: sometimes, it's just more fun to be bad. 1. Dhurandhar (2025) Hero: Ranveer Singh | Villain: Akshaye Khanna In what critics are calling a career-defining turn, Akshaye Khanna has flipped the script completely. His dark, electric, and terrifying portrayal has generated massive online buzz, overshadowing Ranveer Singh's high-energy performance. Khanna's stillness, cold stare, and methodical dialogue delivery reportedly caused pin-drop silence in theatres. Many reviewers noted that every frame featuring him carried an unpredictable tension, making his character the film's psychological core. Status: Trending Blockbuster (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) 2. Sholay (1975) Heroes: Amitabh Bachchan & Dharmendra | Villain: Amjad Khan (Gabbar Singh) Gabbar Singh remains the ultimate benchmark. Despite the star power of Jai and Veeru, Amjad Khan's maniacal laugh and olive greens became the face of the film. His dialogue, Kitne aadmi the?, is arguably more famous than the film itself. Gabbar's unpredictable cruelty made him terrifying even in scenes with minimal movement—an approach that influenced how Bollywood wrote villains for decades. Film historians widely consider Gabbar one of the greatest antagonists in Indian cinema. Box Office: ₹15 Crore (India Net) All-Time Blockbuster 3. Darr (1993) Hero: Sunny Deol | Villain: Shah Rukh Khan (Rahul Mehra) The movie that proved the audience loves a complex villain. SRK's stuttering K-K-K-Kiran garnered immense sympathy, leaving the muscular hero Sunny Deol feeling sidelined in the final edit. SRK's obsessive intensity, silent breakdowns, and unpredictable outbursts added layers rarely explored at the time. His performance not only overshadowed the hero but also marked the beginning of his rise as one of Bollywood's biggest stars, despite playing a negative role. Box Office: ₹10.91 Crore (India Net) Blockbuster 4. Padmaavat (2018) Hero: Shahid Kapoor | Villain: Ranveer Singh (Alauddin Khilji) Before he was overshadowed in Dhurandhar, Ranveer did the overshadowing here. His animalistic, unhinged energy as Khilji devoured the screen, making the noble silence of Shahid Kapoor's character fade into the background. Ranveer's physical transformation, bloodshot eyes, and predatory body language became the cultural talking point of 2018. Many critics argued that Khilji—not the titular queen—was the emotional high point of the narrative. Box Office: ₹302.15 Crore (India Net) Blockbuster (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) 5. Mr. India (1987) Hero: Anil Kapoor | Villain: Amrish Puri (Mogambo) Anil Kapoor had the invisibility watch, but Amrish Puri had the screen presence. With his blonde wig and the iconic line Mogambo Khush Hua, the villain became a cultural phenomenon. Mogambo's eccentric lair, loyal army, and operatic style made him more memorable than even the film's special-effects-driven hero. Puri's booming voice and theatrical delivery created a villain children feared yet imitated with delight. Box Office: ₹5.40 Crore (India Net) Super Hit 6. Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997) Hero: Bobby Deol | Villain: Kajol (Isha Diwan) The twist that shook the nation. Kajol played the sweet lover for two hours, only to reveal herself as a psychopath in the climax. Her range stunned audiences and stole the spotlight from Bobby Deol, earning her a historic Best Villain award. Kajol's transformation from gentle to murderous was so seamless that reviewers called it one of her finest performances. The film is still remembered primarily for her shocking reveal. Box Office: ₹18.11 Crore (India Net) Hit 7. Sangharsh (1999) Hero: Akshay Kumar | Villain: Ashutosh Rana (Lajja Shankar Pandey) While the film was an average grosser, the performance is legendary. Ashutosh Rana's portrayal of a religious fanatic was so terrifying—especially the scene where he screams with his eyes—that it completely eclipsed the lead pair. His unsettling calmness followed by violent rage left a lasting psychological impact. Over time, Rana's role has achieved cult status and is considered one of Bollywood's scariest performances ever. Box Office: ₹5.97 Crore (India Net) Average (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) 8. Ek Villain (2014) Hero: Sidharth Malhotra | Villain: Riteish Deshmukh (Rakesh Mahadkar) Riteish Deshmukh, known for comedy, shocked everyone by playing a frustrated serial killer. His ordinary, middle-class demeanor made his crimes even more chilling, grabbing more attention than the brooding hero. Critics praised how Riteish used silence, guilt, and suppressed anger to create a villain who felt disturbingly real. His portrayal became the main reason for the film's massive word-of-mouth success. Box Office: ₹105.76 Crore (India Net) Super Hit 9. Shaan (1980) Heroes: Amitabh Bachchan & Shashi Kapoor | Villain: Kulbhushan Kharbanda (Shakaal) With a shark tank and a subterranean island, Shakaal was the coolest thing about this movie. Modeled after Bond villains, his sophisticated evil overshadowed the antics of the two lead superstars. Shakaal's bald look, calm voice, and eerie composure became his signature traits. To this day, he is remembered as one of Bollywood's most stylish antagonists, making the hero duo feel surprisingly ordinary. Box Office: ₹4.25 Crore (India Net) Average/ Hit

Sidharth Malhotra's Top 5 Opening Weekend Grossers: Param Sundari At No. 4 Behind Student of The Year

Mumbai, September 1 - Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra returns to the big screen with the romantic-comedy Param Sundari, which is off to a good start at the box office. The movie carried a decent buzz, which also translated into footfalls on the expected lines. Param Sundari scored the opening weekend collection of around 27 crores net, which is among the biggest of his career, but the biggest opening weekend still belongs to Brothers, which released in 2015 and also starred Akshay Kumar. The action drama opened to good numbers and collected around 52 crore in its first three days. Close behind Brothers is romantic action thriller Ek Villain (2014), which turned out to be a game-changer for Sidharth. With its strong music and gripping storyline, the film earned over 50 crores net in its opening weekend and cemented the actor's standing among the bankable young stars of that time. Sidharth's debut film, Student of the Year (2012), backed by Karan Johar, continues to hold a special place. Despite being a launchpad for three newcomers, Sidharth, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt, the film impressed at the ticket windows with a 30 crore weekend. More than a decade later, it still outshines some of his recent work, including Param Sundari, when it comes to the opening performance. Just behind Param Sundari, which is the 4th biggest opening weekend grosser of the actor, is Kapoor & Sons (2016), which managed 26 crore despite not being promoted as a mass entertainer. Another notable film is Marjaavaan (2019), which collected over 24 crore but couldn't break into the top five weekend grossers of Sidharth. With Param Sundari placing fourth in his career's biggest opening weekends, it's evident that Sidharth's strongest box office impact so far has come from action-packed or ensemble films. As he continues to explore new genres, fans and trade alike will be watching closely to see if he can surpass the benchmark set by Brothers and deliver an even bigger opening in the future. Param Sundari Box Office: Sidharth Malhotra Registers His 5th Biggest Opener

Mumbai, August 30 - Maddock Films’ romantic comedy Param Sundari has kicked off its box office journey on a promising note, emerging as one of the strongest openers of the year in its genre. The film, directed by Tushar Jalota, had decent pre-sales, which led to its expected opening. Headlined by Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, Param Sundari collected around 7.25 crore net on the opening day. This marks Sidharth's fifth biggest opening to date and his strongest since Thank God (2022). In terms of solo outings, it is his biggest opener since Marjaavaan (2019). Director Mohit Suri's Ek Villain (2014) continues to remain Sidharth's career-best opening day grosser with 16.70 crores net, followed by 2015's Brothers (15.21 crores), which also starred Akshay Kumar. Thank God, co-starring Ajay Devgn, takes the 3rd spot at 8.10 crores, while the actor's debut movie, Student Of The Year (2014), is the 4th biggest opener with 7.48 crores net. Param Sundari's good start comes as a welcome relief for Malhotra, who has struggled at the box office in the post-pandemic era. Backed by positive critics' reviews and encouraging word of mouth, the rom-com is poised to enjoy a solid opening weekend, which is expected to be around 30 crores net. Stay tuned...

Sidharth Malhotra, Janhvi Kapoor's Param Sundari Day 1 Early Estimates: Takes A Good Start

Mumbai, August 29 - Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor's romantic comedy Param Sundari has opened on the expected lines at the domestic box office, as suggested by the pre-sales response and trade projection. It would have been very good had the film managed to hit double digits, but the opening is still good for the cast. According to the early estimates, the Maddock Films' production scored 7-7.50 crores net, which is among the biggest openings for Sidharth. The numbers might go a little higher depending on the response in the smaller centres, but it is more or less likely to come in the estimated range. The opening of Param Sundari is a little better than Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon's Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Mein, which had a similar genre and almost a similar release size. TBMAUJ went on to become a success story, and here, Param Sundari can achieve the same, as the initial reception seems to be good. Param Sundari managed to generate decent buzz through the trailer and songs, which worked with the young audience. Even though the pre-sales were not that strong, it was expected to get a good response in the walk-ins due to its family-friendly content, which has happened. All eyes are now on the growth over Saturday and Sunday, as the movie eyes 30 crores net opening weekend, which will be a good result. The good thing is that there is no big new release this weekend, while holdovers are also exhausting, which should help Param Sundari over the weekend. Stay tuned...

From Student of the Year to Param Sundari: 13 Years of Sidharth Malhotra's Cinematic Journey

Mumbai, August 28 - Very few would have imagined the journey Sidharth Malhotra was going to have when he made his Bollywood debut with filmmaker Karan Johar's coming-of-age romantic comedy Student of the Year in 2012. Over the last 13 years, the actor has left a mark with films across romance, action, thrillers, and war drama genres. As he now gears up for his 2025 release, Param Sundari, here's a look at the highlights of his cinematic journey so far. The Debut and Early Success Filmmaker Karan Johar, famous for launching star kids in Bollywood, launched Sidharth alongside Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in Student of the Year (2012), a youthful drama that became a commercial success and positioned him as a promising newcomer. He followed it up with Hasee Toh Phasee (2014), a quirky rom-com where his chemistry with Parineeti Chopra was appreciated, and Ek Villain (2014), which marked his entry into the big league. Experimentation and Mixed Bag Phase After the big early success, Sidharth tested different genres over the next few years. In Brothers (2015), he attempted a high-intensity sports drama with superstar Akshay Kumar, as the film ended up as an average affair. Kapoor & Sons (2016), however, turned out to be a critical and commercial hit, showcasing him in an ensemble with a layered family drama. Films like Baar Baar Dekho (2016), A Gentleman (2017), Ittefaq (2017), and Aiyaary (2018) received mixed to negative responses, making this a challenging period for the actor. The Resurgence & Patriotic Turn Sidharth bounced back with Marjaavaan (2019), a massy romantic action film with seetimaar dialogues that connected with single-screen audiences. It was the biographical war drama, Shershaah (2021), that could have become the biggest box office success of the actor, but it was denied that chance due to its direct-to-digital release. It was still a game-changer for the actor as his portrayal of Captain Vikram Batra won widespread acclaim, bringing him critical respect, as he was hailed for delivering his career-best performance. Recent Works & Looking Ahead Post-Shershaah, Sidharth ventured into diverse territories. He shared screen with Ajay Devgn in the fantasy comedy-drama film Thank God (2022), which bombed at the box office, before he starred in a direct-to-digital release, Mission Majnu (2023), a patriotic spy thriller, and Yodha (2024), a high-octane action film. The actor's journey after the COVID-19 pandemic has hit a roadblock with no big success, barring Shershaah, which saved the day for him. The actor is now stepping into romantic comedy once again with Param Sundari (2025), co-starring Janhvi Kapoor. Billed as a breezy entertainer, the film is already generating buzz as a genre comeback for Sidharth after years of intense roles. The movie, from Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films, is gearing up to hit the big screens on August 29, as a potential success for the actor. Across 13 years, Sidharth Malhotra's cinematic journey has had highs and lows, but what stands out is his resilience and ability to reinvent himself. From the candy-floss romance of Student of the Year to the grit of Shershaah, and now towards the playful charm of Param Sundari, he continues to remain a relevant and evolving presence in Bollywood. Going forward, the actor continues to experiment, as his next is a folk thriller, Vvan: Force of the Forrest, which releases next year. Stay tuned...

Param Sundari Box Office Preview/Day 1 Prediction: Can Sidharth Malhotra Revive His Form with This Rom-Com?

Mumbai, August 28 - Sidharth Malhotra is gearing up for the release of his much-anticipated romantic comedy Param Sundari, which also has Janhvi Kapoor as the female lead. Directed by Tushar Jalota, the movie has come at a time when romantic films are making their comeback at the box office, and all eyes are on how Param Sundari handles the situation. Sidharth, who has been going through a tough phase in his career as far as the box office is concerned, is banking heavily on this light-hearted entertainer to reconnect with audiences who once loved him in films like Hasee Toh Phasee and Student of the Year. In the post-pandemic era, the big-ticket action entertainers have ruled the box office, while romantic comedies are slowly but surely gaining momentum. Param Sundari aims to revive the space with a fresh mix of romance, comedy, and vibrant music, hoping to appeal to young urban audiences as well as families. As has been the history, the romantic-comedy films (barring a few) heavily bank on word of mouth and Param Sundari falls in that category, even though it is seeing decent response in the pre-sales. Looking at the pre-sales trend and per trade projections, the film could open in the range of 7–9 crores on Day 1, depending on word of mouth. It will be released on over 2500 screens nationwide. The good thing is that the movie has managed to generate decent buzz through trailer and songs, which should boost spot bookings. If the film manages to deliver the right mix of humour and emotional depth, it could enjoy a strong run, especially with limited competition in the rom-com zone. For Sidharth Malhotra, Param Sundari is more than just another release — it's a crucial film that could decide his trajectory going forward. A clean hit would not only re-establish him as a bankable star but also bring the rom-com genre back into the conversation after years of being overshadowed by action blockbusters and big-scale dramas. Sidharth Malhotra, Janhvi Kapoor's Param Sundari Advance Booking Begins On A Decent Note

Mumbai, August 27 - Sidharth Malhotra returns to the big screen with romantic comedy Param Sundari, which has Janhvi Kapoor as the female lead. Directed by Tushar Jalota, the film has managed to generate decent buzz through teaser/trailer and songs, which have gone viral. Scheduled to release on August 29, the advance booking of Param Sundari was opened on August 26, and the initial reception is decent. The movie has sold around 10K tickets so far for the opening day across the BookMyShow and District apps in the first 24 hours, and the number is expected to increase as the day progresses. Romantic comedies normally don't carry huge advances like action entertainers, as they rely on walk-ups and word of mouth. Param Sundari comes at a time when romantic films are working at the box office, and a decent response for it will put it in a good positive to build on. The trade is anticipating Param Sundari to open in the range of 10 crores net, which can go higher if the word of mouth is positive. If the film manages to open in double digits, it will be a very good start, and among the biggest openings for the lead pair. Param Sundari is produced by Maddock Films, which has been delivering quality content over the last few years and has also delivered big at the box office. It could be an advantage for the film, as it can help in the pre-sales with 2 days still to go before the release. Stay tuned...
