Kochi, May 25 - The Malayalam film industry is reaching new heights in 2024 and for the very first time in its history, Malayalam movies have topped 1000 crores gross collection at the worldwide box office in a single year. ## The total worldwide collection of 2024 Malayalam movies is approximately 1030 crores gross, including 660 crores gross in India and 370 crores overseas, as of May 24. Domestically, Mollywood has contributed approximately 20% of the total collection this year, behind Hindi (40%) and Telugu (23%). ## The real-life inspired survival thriller Manjummel Boys has been the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2024 with a worldwide collection of 241 crores, including 167.50 crores gross in India and 73.50 crores overseas. It is also the highest-grossing Mollywood title of all time. ## Among the other major contributors, Prithviraj Sukumaran's Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life and Fahadh Faasil-fronted Aavesham at the second and third position with 157.50 crores gross and 153.50 crores gross worldwide, respectively. Romantic-comedy Premalu is the 4th biggest with 131.50 crores worldwide collection. ## Mollywood had a slow start to the year with the disappointing outcome of a big-budget entertainer Malaikottai Vaaliban along with a couple of other anticipated films. Cannes, May 25 - Actress Anasuya Sengupta has created history by becoming the first Indian to win the Best Actress award at the Un Certain Regard segment of the Cannes Film Festival. ## Sengupta received the prestigious award for her role in the film Shameless directed and written by Bulgarian filmmaker Constantin Bojanov. The film portrays the journey of a sex worker who escapes from a brothel in Delhi after stabbing a policeman. ## "You don’t have to be queer to fight for equality, you don’t have to be colonised to understand that colonising is pathetic — we just need to be very, very decent human beings", Sengupta said in her acceptance speech (via India Today). ## Anasuya is recognised primarily for her work as a production designer in Mumbai and her work includes set design of the Netflix show Masaba Masaba. Mumbai, May 25 - Recently, it was reported that Ranveer Singh would be teaming up with Telugu director Prasanth Varma for a big-budget film, tentatively titled Rakshas. However, later it was reported that the movie was shelved due to creative differences and now, there is another report on the same. ## According to the latest Telugu media reports, the film's team has officially confirmed that the rumours are baseless and are not true. The official update reveals that Ranveer Singh is very much a part of the movie which will go on floors soon. ## Mythri Movie Makers will be bankrolling the project for which, an announcement promo was shot recently. Hyderabad, May 25 - Pan India superstar Prabhas-fronted Kalki 2898 AD has landed its North America theatrical distribution with Prathyangira Cinemas and AA Creations for a huge sum. The movie is directed by Nag Ashwin and also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani, and Kamal Haasan.## According to reports, Prathyangira Cinemas and AA Creations have acquired distribution rights for the sci-fi epic at a huge price of 50 crores for North America on a refundable advance basis. It is one of the biggest deals for an Indian movie. ## Prathyangira Cinemas previously released Prabhas-fronted, Salaar on record number of screens and the same is expected for Kalki 2898 AD as well. ## Produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, Kalki is easily one of the most anticipated Indian films of the year. Mumbai, May 24 - Actor R. Madhavan is set to reunite with Bollywood star Ajay Devgn in the sequel to romantic-comedy De De Pyaar De. Directed by Anshul Sharma, DDPD 2 has Rakul Preet Singh as the female lead, reprising her role from the original movie along with Ajay Devgn. ## According to the report by Pinkvilla, R. Madhavan has come on board to play a key role which was supposed to be played by Anil Kapoor. Madhavan and Ajay Devgn previously shared screen space in the horror thriller Shaitaan which was released earlier this year and was a big box office success. ## "Ajay Devgn and R Madhavan had a horrific face-off in Shaitaan, and now, come 2025, the duo will again lock horns in De De Pyaar De 2. However, this time around, their on-screen chemistry will have a complete makeover, as the face-off will have a lot of comic undertones", says the report.## The sequel will chronicle comic events in the family of Rakul Preet Singh arising out of the relationship between Ashish (Ajay Devgn) and Ayesha (Rakul). Mumbai, May 24 - Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is gearing up to start shooting for director AR Murugadoss' action drama Sikandar, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna in June this year. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the movie will be released on Eid 2025. ## According to a report by Mid-Day, Sikandar will go on floors on June 20 with a power-packed schedule in Mumbai. The pre-production was reportedly begun a few days ago and the makers are on track to start rolling it in June this year. ## Murugadoss is presently directing actor Sivakarthikeyan's Sk 23. It is said that the filmmaker wants to complete as much of SK23 as possible before Sikandar goes on floors and to avoid any delays, Murugadoss has assembled a dedicated team to expedite the completion of SK23. ## Salman Khan has already begun his preparations for the movie and it is said that the actor insists on performing the action sequences himself. Kochi, May 24 - Megastar Mammootty's action comedy Turbo set the box office on fire and scored the second biggest opening of 2024 for a Malayalam film after Prithviraj Sukumaran's blockbuster Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life.## Turbo has had one of the biggest releases for a Malayalam title. On its opening day, the movie minted approximately 7.20 crores gross collection at the Indian box office, including 6.15 crores gross in Kerala state alone which is the biggest opening for Mammootty. Aadujeevitham took the opening of 8.75 crores gross in India.## In Kerala, Turbo had the biggest start of the year and third biggest overall after Odiyan (6.75 crores) and Marakkar (6.25 crores). Earlier, superstar Mohanlal's Malaikottai Vaaliban was the biggest opener of 2024 with 5.80 crores gross collection in the state. ## The rest of the domestic collection (outside Kerala) of Turbo is approximately 1.05 crore, including an estimated 65 lakh in Karnataka. Chennai, May 23 - Thalapathy Vijay's science fiction action drama The Greatest of All Time post-theatrical digital rights reportedly sold to Netflix for a massive sum of 110 crores, according to a report by Only Kollywood. ## Directed by Venkat Prabhu, The GOAT is easily one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year and it is expected to set the box office on fire. Thalapathy Vijay's films have also attracted massive viewership on digital platforms and GOAT is expected to repeat the same despite non-direct OTT release. ## Netflix has been the home of many South Indian films after their theatrical releases and has paid huge prices for the same.
