Kannada Film Industry Takes Fresh Breath After Karnataka Government Lifts Weekend Curfew

Bangalore, January 24 - The Kannada film industry is heaving a sigh of relief after the Karnataka government decides to lift the weekend curfew, imposed two weeks ago. This news comes at a time when the film industry is looking for revival after a major setback caused by the second covid-19 wave. ## Earlier, just when the Kannada film industry was set for the blockbuster opening of the year, the 3rd covid wave forced the government to announce fresh restrictions in the state. However, with the 3rd wave not resulting in a surge in hospitalization and the recovery rate also being high, the government withdrew its decision of weekend curfew. ## Most of the theatres across the state, which had been closed for two weeks because of the weekend curfew, are all set to reopen and welcome audiences. Though the state government is permitting only 50 percent occupancy at present, multiple reports have suggested that 100 percent occupancy will be allowed by the next weekend. ## Meanwhile, the filmmakers have started rescheduling the release dates of their movies, which were supposed to release two weeks ago. Among the first Kannada films to release in the state after the reopening of cinemas is "DNA", which is slated to hit theaters this week, followed by "Obhattane Dikku", starring Yogesh on January 28.## However, the fans are waiting for the release of Rakshith Shetty's "777 Charlie", Darling Krishna, and Milana's "Love Mocktail 2", Kichcha Sudeepa's Pan-India film "Vikrant Rona", among other Kannada movies. "777 Charlie" was supposed to release last year. The makers will now announce the new release date in the next few days.## Kichcha Sudeepa's big-budget 3D adventure film "Vikrant Rona" is slated for February 24 release, and it looks like the movie will go ahead with its planned release. Interestingly, makers had received a whopping Rs. 100 crores offer from the leading OTT giant for its direct OTT release but rejected it stating that it is made for the big screen experience. ## Meanwhile, the team helming the much-anticipated "Bairagee", starring Shivarajkumar and Dhananjay, has announced the completion of the shooting. The team is all set to launch the teaser soon. Shivarajkumar's last film "Bhajarangi 2" was released on October 29 last year. It opened well at the box before got a major jolt due to the death of Shiva Rajkumar's brother Puneeth.## Last year, the Kannada films were able to catch the attention of movie lovers before and after the second covid-19 wave. Covid Third Wave Dampens Sandalwood's Sankranthi Spirit

Bengaluru, Jan 14 (IANS) The Covid-19 surge has proved to be costly for the Kannada film industry, aka Sandalwood, as the movies that made a good start at the box office are not being able to capitalize on their success.## The reason? The Karnataka government has limited occupancy in cinema theatres to 50 percent because of the third wave.## Producers who had planned grand Sankranthi releases have deferred their movies. And the film trade estimates that by the time the third wave peters down, scores of theatres across the state will permanently close down.## 'Badava Rascal', starring actor Dhananjaya, was released on December 24 and showed all signs of becoming a hit. The movie team had already begun a tour across the state to celebrate its success, but it received a rude shock when the 50 percent limitation was announced in the first week of January.## Dhananjaya stated that though the makers were happy with the box-office pickings, the restrictions had affected the prospect of the movie doing even better.## The Nikhil Kumaraswamy-starrer big-budget movie 'Rider', also released on December 24, had begun well at the box office, but then had to incur heavy losses. 'Arjun Gowda', the movie starring Prajwal Devraj, was also hit badly by the state government's decision.## The big Kannada movies will now be slated for release during the Varamahalakshmi, Ganesha, and Vijayadashami festivals. In fact, when the second Covid wave hit hard, major releases, including pan-India projects such as the Kichcha Sudeep-starrer 'Vikranth Rona', had to be postponed.## No Kannada film has been released after December 31. With experts predicting that the third wave will peak in February, the producers are unsure about releasing their movies. Industry sources said there won't be any big releases for another two months, which is going to spell doom for theatre owners.## By the time the third wave subsides, industry sources said, more than 200 theatres will shut down permanently. Makers Of Kichcha Sudeepa's 'Vikrant Rona' Reject Rs. 100 Crores Direct OTT Offer

Bangalore, January 8 - The makers of Kichacha Sudeepa's big-budget action-adventure film "Vikrant Rona" have reinstated their commitment to the film's theatrical release, despite the lucrative OTT offers. Directed by Anup Bhandari, "Vikrant Rona" is currently slated for February 24, 2022, worldwide in multiple languages. ## Since the movie has been delayed a few times, there were reports that the makers might take the OTT route for the film. It has been reported that one of the leading digital platforms offered Rs. 100 crores for direct-to-OTT release. Producer Jack Manjunath too confirmed that they are getting many big offers but they are committed to the theatrical release of the film. ## "It is true that we have been receiving some really good offers for direct online releases as it is a film that created a buzz nationally. But the film has seen nearly three years of hard work to ensure it is a world-class 3D release. Hence, while the prices being offered are tempting, we are waiting for a proper theatrical release to ensure everyone sees our vision the way we intended them to", he said according to ETimes. ## Meanwhile, the makers haven't taken a call on pushing the release date of "Vikrant Rona" yet as the country is going through the third covid-19 wave. Many states have imposed restrictions on theaters, including Karnataka, where theater capacity has been reduced to 50% and night curfews have also been introduced. ## However, they did have to change their plans with regard to promotions. "We had a teaser that was planned for a January-11 release where it would have been playing along with all the big festive releases across different languages. But, with most of them postponing their releases, we were forced to change that plan and have deferred our teaser launch for now".## "Vikrant Rona" is a 3D film that will be released in Kannada along with dubbed versions of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and other languages. The cast of the film also includes Nirup Bhandari, Neeta Ashok, and Vasuki Vaibhav, among others.
